Beach Surveillance and Digital Scarring

New Nostalgia

You & You

This is a further continuation of "Surveillance and Selves", an exploration of private and public selves through the medium of surveillance. In these images the sitter becomes the viewer and the audience observe him twice, firstly in the projection, secondly him watching or not watching the other self being projected around and on him.

Work in Progress

As a continuation of my project looking at surveillance and public and private selves. The work is developing into a process of filming and extracting, filming and extracting. Its exciting not being able to predict what images I will end up with, they only become apparent after a hefty amount of time spent editing down.

Image for Art Below Exhibition (London Underground)

Art Below September Exhibition in London Underground

I have finally got round to submitting my image for Art Below (an exhibition running across London Underground) should know fairly soon what station and dates my work will be up. I know will be up at some point in September 2011 and that it will be in either Borough, Pimlico or Elephant and Castle station.

Have a look at the Art Below Website for current exhibitions and more http://www.artbelow.org.uk/ab/Home.action

As soon as I know more about the September Art Below Exhibition, and where and when my work will be I'll let you know.

Surveillance Portraits

A couple of images taken from my most recent body of work, exploring private and public selves and surveillance's affect on them.

Uta Barth Photography

Wonderful and inspiring work by Uta Barth. She subtly hints at what is before the viewer and at the same time offering every viewer the feeling of nostalgia. Also the wonderful paradox of both stillness and motion, busy and calm being reflected within her images.

Surveillance on the Beach

"Our Society is not one of spectacle, but one of surveillance, under the surface of images, one invests bodies in depth." Foucault

Guitar Watching

Images of Sam playing guitar. Watching the movement of an instrument being played is as hypnotic as listening to the music it makes. The movement demand your full visual attention, while the sounds demand the full attention of your hearing.

Words by Richard Woodward

"Pressing the button and taking a picture allows everyone to imagine there will be an audience, even if it's an audience of one."

Surveillance in the Sticks

Camera Paintings

Summer Rainy Walk

More experimental still extracting

Landscapes made out of people, people that look like landscapes.

Experimenting with extracting stills

Extracting stills from moving images, is a further abstraction from what is in front the camera. I like the blankness of these images and how there is no trace of people within them, despite the images being extracted from a moving image of people dancing.

Words by Guy Debord from The Society of the Spectacle

“Our society is not one of spectacle, but one of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests bodies in depth”

“For one whom the real world becomes real images, mere images are transformed into real beings....... the most abstract of the senses, and the most easily deceived, sight is naturally the most readily adaptable to present-day society’s generalised abstraction.”
